Billy Wagner

Billy Wagner is a student at Theo Decker's school on the Upper West Side, part of the tight, competitive group of older boys into which Theo was placed after being skipped ahead a grade. He is a minor figure who nonetheless marks a sharp turning point in Theo's social world after the museum bombing that killed Theo's mother.

Role in the Social Hierarchy

Billy Wagner belongs to the same clique as Thad Randolph and Tom Cable, the boy whose cigarette-smoking incident led to Theo's suspension and, ultimately, to Theo being at the museum on the day of the explosion. After the bombing, when Theo returns to school, he finds that Tom Cable has not only distanced himself but has taken up with Billy Wagner and Thad Randolph as his new best friends. Theo observes them running past him in the hall, "the way we'd once raced around together, always in overdrive, that urge to danger and craziness."
